Gutter & Downpipe Repairs, Sydney Inner West
Sagging gutters, rust holes, cracked joins, box gutter repairs and blocked downpipes, fixed across Marrickville, Newtown, Balmain, Leichhardt, Ashfield and the surrounding suburbs. Diagnosed honestly, quoted separately, no pressure.
A blocked gutter today is a repair job tomorrow.
Gutters that sit full of wet leaf litter for long stretches don’t just overflow, the weight itself does damage. A metre of waterlogged debris is heavier than most people expect, and over time it pulls brackets away from the fascia, stresses joins until the sealant cracks, and speeds up corrosion in older iron and steel guttering that’s common across the Inner West’s older housing stock.
By the time a repair need becomes obvious, water staining on a wall, a visible sag, a drip at a join, the underlying cause has usually been building for a while. That’s why we treat repairs as something to catch early, either during a routine clean or as a standalone inspection, rather than waiting for a full failure during the next heavy rain.
The good news: most gutter problems we see are entirely fixable without a full replacement, if they’re caught before they get away from you.
Common gutter failures we repair.
Sagging or pulling away from the fascia
Usually caused by brackets stressed under the weight of waterlogged debris. We re-support and re-pitch the run so water falls the right way again.
Rust holes & corrosion
Common in older steel and iron guttering. Isolated spots can often be patched and treated, though heavy corrosion across multiple sections is a different conversation.
Cracked or failed sealant at joins
Joins take the most movement and weathering of any part of a gutter run. A failed seal is one of the more straightforward repairs we do.
Box gutter repairs
Federation terraces across the Inner West, from Newtown to Balmain, often share a box gutter buried between party walls. These need a different repair approach to a standard eaves gutter, and sometimes a shared conversation with your neighbour.
Loose or missing brackets
Left unaddressed, a single loose bracket puts extra strain on the ones either side of it. Usually a quick, low-cost fix.
Damaged flashing
Flashing that’s lifted or cracked at a wall or chimney junction lets water in behind the gutter line entirely, often the real source of an “unexplained” ceiling stain.
Downpipe repairs, above and below ground.
A perfectly clear gutter is no use if the downpipe underneath it can’t move water away. We see three recurring downpipe problems across the Inner West:
- Blocked from root ingress. Established street trees and garden plantings send roots into ageing underground stormwater sections, especially on older clay or fibro pipe.
- Blocked from mineral buildup or compacted silt. Years of fine debris washing through a downpipe can compact into scale that a simple flush won’t clear.
- Disconnected or crushed sections. Common after landscaping work, vehicle damage, or simply old age on properties that haven’t had a downpipe checked in years.
Where a downpipe is discharging too close to a foundation or a shared wall, which shows up a lot on older, narrow blocks around Marrickville and Leichhardt, we can also look at re-routing it to a better discharge point as part of the repair.
Most repairs start as a note in a clean report.
“We always check for this while we’re already up there. If your gutters need a clean, that’s the best moment to catch a repair issue before it turns into a bigger, wetter problem.”
Every gutter cleaning job includes a written condition note on anything beyond the clean itself, rust spots, a sagging section, a cracked seal, a downpipe that’s slow to flush. Small fixes, like a loose bracket, we often just handle on the spot at no extra call-out. Anything bigger gets quoted separately through this repairs service, so you always know what you’re paying for and why, with no pressure either way.
Repair, or full replacement?
As a rule of thumb: isolated rust spots, a single sagging section, or a cracked join at one point in the run are usually a straightforward repair. We can fix these without touching the rest of the gutter.
Full replacement becomes the more sensible call when a gutter is rusted through in multiple spots along its length, or when it’s original iron guttering that’s simply reached the natural end of its service life. Patching a gutter that’s failing in several places at once is often a short-term fix that costs more in the long run than doing it properly once.
Where a job is genuinely beyond gutter cleaning and repair scope, a full re-guttering job, we’ll say so honestly and refer you to a suitable specialist rather than take on work that isn’t the right fit for us.
Often booked alongside a repair.
Questions we get about gutter repairs.
How much do gutter repairs cost?
It depends entirely on what’s wrong, a re-seal at one join is a very different job to re-pitching a sagging run or rebuilding a box gutter. We inspect first and quote the repair separately before any work starts, so you’re never guessing at a number.
Can you fix a sagging gutter?
In most cases, yes. Sagging is usually caused by brackets that have pulled away from the fascia under the weight of waterlogged debris. We re-support and re-pitch the run so water falls the right way again. If the fascia timber itself has rotted, that’s a carpentry job we’ll refer you on for.
Do you repair box gutters on terraces?
Yes, this is a big part of our repair work. Box gutters buried between party walls on Federation terraces are common across Marrickville, Newtown, Balmain and Leichhardt, and they fail differently to a standard eaves gutter, often with a shared responsibility conversation needed with your neighbour.
What causes a blocked downpipe?
Usually either root ingress from a nearby tree working into an underground stormwater section, or a build-up of mineral scale and compacted silt over years of leaf litter washing through. Crushed or disconnected sections from old age or accidental damage are common too.
Do you diagnose repairs during a routine gutter clean?
Yes. Every clean includes a written condition note on anything we spot, rust, sagging, cracked sealant, damaged downpipes. Small fixes we often just do on the spot. Anything bigger gets quoted separately through this repairs service, so you decide what to act on and when.
Should I repair my gutters or replace them?
As a rule of thumb, isolated rust spots, a single sagging section or a cracked join are usually a straightforward repair. If a gutter is rusted through in multiple spots, or it’s original iron guttering that’s simply reached the end of its life, full replacement is often the more sensible long-term call. We’ll always tell you honestly which category your situation falls into.
Is full gutter replacement something you do?
Our core work is cleaning, guard and repairs. If your gutters are beyond repair and need a full replacement, that’s outside our scope, and we’ll be upfront about that and refer you to a suitable specialist rather than take on work we’re not set up for.
Can you re-route a downpipe away from my foundations?
In many cases, yes. Water discharging too close to a foundation or a shared wall is a common issue on older Inner West blocks, and re-routing a downpipe to a better discharge point is often a straightforward part of a repair job. We’ll assess it on site and quote accordingly.
